How to prep for Study Abroad
1 Oct 2023Educational

Hey there, this blog is all about students in India who dream of studying in the USA. I'm dishing out my own journey and experience, so it's all about making your American dreams come true! 🇮🇳📚🇺🇸

01. Reason?

Why have you considered pursuing a master's in the USA?

Well, before diving into this decision, take a moment to reflect. Don't simply follow the crowd; have a chat with yourself and your closed ones.

You might be wondering, "This isn't what I came here for, is it?" 😂 But hang on, If you're certain that you wanted to pursue master in us, then I promise you'll glean some valuable insights. Trust me! ;)

02. Select the Uni

So, you've embraced the idea of a challenging journey, and I'm here to make it a bit smoother for you!

Let's talk about the most crucial step: Choosing the right university. Many folks, myself included, often make the mistake of fixating solely on scores (hello GRE and GPA!). But hold on a second, there's a smarter approach—start by building a targeted university list! 🎯🎯🎯

Let me break down why this is so essential:

  • Some universities don't require the GRE at all. So, if you compile a list of GRE-optional schools, you can skip the whole GRE prep process—a lot of universities are offering this option nowadays.
  • Both GRE and TOEFL exams are administered by ETS. After you take these exams, your scores must be sent directly to your chosen universities, and yes, ETS charges a fee for that.
Now, here's the catch: After your exams, ETS allows you to send your scores to five universities for free, but only right after the exam. So, if you've got your list handy, you can save some cash by not manually sending scores later.
  • With a specific list of target universities, you'll have a clear idea of the minimum scores you need to aim for.

Now, you might wonder, how on earth do I make this list?

Allow me to explain. Everyone has different criteria for sorting universities, and here are some key factors:

  1. Financial Considerations
  2. Family situation
  3. Location preference
  4. University rankings and reputation
  5. Available opportunities

Plus, you can consider personal factors like:

  1. A desired course of study
  2. Building a social circle
  3. Weather preferences

Keep it concise—try to limit your list to just five universities, no more. Be confident in your choices, and for the love of all things academic, include 1-2 universities where you're reasonably certain of admission.

03. Gather Documents

So, if you've just graduated and you're aiming to snag those coveted Letters of Recommendation from your professors, brace yourselves—it's quite the adventure!

Here's the scoop on what you'll need:

  1. Three golden Letters of Recommendation from your trusty professors or manager if you’ve the real battle experience
  2. Your Statement of Purpose—pour your academic dreams and aspirations into it.
  3. A killer Resume—time to show off your academic prowess
  4. Passport (unless you're already a secret agent)
  5. Transcripts—a paper trail of your academic adventures.
  6. Every semester mark sheet
  7. Don't forget those 10th and 12th-grade mark sheets—the nostalgia!
  8. Your Degree certificate—the crown jewel. 🏆🔥
  9. Bank statements—budgeting for the academic adventure. 💰🤹‍♂️

There you go, a quick and breezy checklist of documents for your journey into higher education! 😉🚀

04. Prep

Alright, now that you've locked in your university choice, it's time to gear up for the preparation phase. Strap in tight; there will be a few bumps along the way!

Start by asking yourself some crucial questions:

  1. What's your learning style?
    1. Do you thrive under professional guidance and supervision?
    2. Can you stay disciplined and study independently?
  2. Are you studying part-time, and what's your schedule like?
  3. Do you have good local classes available?
  4. Are you willing to invest a significant amount of money in your GRE prep?

Once you have these answers in your pocket, it's decision time! You've got two main options for GRE preparation:

Option-1. Offline Classes

This is the straightforward choice if you need structured guidance and can afford the time and money. Just go for it, no need to overthink!

Your workload will be significantly lighter with in-person classes, leaving you more time to focus on studying.

Option-2. Online Course + Consultancy for Paperwork

Now, here's where it gets a bit tricky.

First, you'll need to find the right online course for you, and trust me, I have a gem to recommend: drum roll, please - GregMat ~ I took Greg's online course ;).

Pros of GregMat:

  1. Budget-friendly
  2. Exceptional mentorship
  3. Flexibility in your study schedule
  4. Targeted focus on exam-relevant topics
  5. A plethora of problem-solving strategies
  6. Engaging teaching style

GregMat offers both 1 and 2-month prep pathways. If you have the time, go for the 2-month option, or stick with the 1-month if you're in a hurry. If you're studying part-time, it might take a bit longer than these timeframes.

Here's a golden tip: Don't just watch the recorded videos; put what you've learned into practice by tackling problems regularly.
